Kayaking Tips

For your paddling enjoyment

Get in gracefully, Exit safely

Getting in and out of a kayak gracefully and safely helps to make the entire adventure a good one. Techniques can vary depending on whether you are with a friend or by yourself, and whether you are on the beach or on a dock. Check out this very informative 4-minute video (from our friends at REI) for some tips regarding how to get in and out of your kayak.

paddle efficiently

Good posture and paddling technique can help you kayak more efficiently, comfortably, and powerfully. Travel farther and see more while using less energy. Read these couple tips and then watch any of the three excellent videos (scroll down) from our friends at PaddleTV and REI.
Posture
Sit up straight with relaxed shoulders and a spine that's slightly forward of vertical. Keep your feet on the footrests for stability and power. If you're in a sit-in kayak, bend your knees and hook them under the thigh braces or cockpit rim. (Adjust the foot pedals as appropriate.) If you're in a sit-on kayak, lock your knees into the foot braces to keep you tight in the boat and in control. Avoid leaning back, as the backrest is meant to help you sit upright and maintain contact with the boat. View this page for more detail.
Paddling
Use your core, legs, and arms in coordination to maximize your body's power. Here are some tips for holding and using the paddle:
Grip: Keep your hands shoulder width apart. Line up your knuckles with the top edge of the blade, and make an "O" with your thumb and forefinger around the shaft. Keep your grip loose so your wrist stays straight and your joints are easier on.
Stroke: Plant the blade in the water near your foot, then twist your torso so one side of your body is pointing forward. Push your upper hand forward and pull back with your lower hand while twisting. You can try different strokes, such as forward sweeps or reverse sweeps, to move the boat in different directions. Read more here, or watch the videos below.
The video below is a bit more advanced, but very helpful once you have a little experience on the water....

Have fun with your kayak from Jack's!
